Burundi’s former president Pierre Buyoya is dead. He died on Thursday 27 December 2020 in paris.
Anonymous sources said that Mr . Buyoya died of the coronavirus.
He died at the age of 71, barely weeks after he resigned as the African Union’s special envoy to Mali and the Sahel.
A career military man, Mr. Buyoya ruled Burundi from 1987-1993 following a coup d’etat against Jean Baptiste Bagaza and later from 1996-2003.
He held the post of High Representative of the African Union for Mali and the Sahel from 2012 to the end of November following his life sentence in the murder of his predecessor Melchior Ndadaye.
