TANZANIA: Former President Benjamin Mkapa is dead

The former president of Tanzania Benjamin William Mkapa has passed away.

He died on Thursday 23 July 2020 at a hospital in Dar es Salaam while receiving treatment, announced the current President John Pombe Magufuli.

"With great sadness, I am announcing the death of former President Benjamin William Mkapa, who died in a hospital in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam where he was receiving treatment," President Magufuli said in a short statement broadcast on state-owned media Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC).

“I call on all Tanzanians to receive the news of his death and to pray for Mzee Mkapa. More information will be released but Mzee Mkapa is no more,” he added.

Mr. Mkapa has played several peace mediation roles in conflict resolution in the East African bloc during and after his presidential terms notably in Kenya, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe, South Sudan, and Burundi.

He was part of the team led by former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, which ended the post-election violence in Kenya after the highly disputed December 2007 elections.

He facilitated peace talks between the Burundi government and the opposition in 2016 that were aimed at ending a long political crisis in the country.

Born on 23 November 1938, the 81-year-old Mkapa was last seen in public on 11 July 2020 in the capital, Dodoma, when ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) picked Magufuli to run for a second term in the upcoming October polls.

Mr. Mkapa served Tanzania from 1995 to 2005 as the third President of the East African country before handing over to Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete.

President Magufuli has declared a seven-day mourning period in memory of Mr. Mkapa, beginning today Friday 24 July 2020.

During this nationwide mourning period, flags will be flown at half-mast and country’s embassies abroad.
