Schools in South Africa will be closed for the second time as the country continues to witness a surge in the number of coronavirus cases.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that public schools will be closed for a period of four weeks starting on Monday 27 July through 24 August 2020 so as to curb the rapid spread of the coronavirus in the country.
"Taking into account the views of the various stakeholders and expert bodies, the Cabinet decided that all public schools should take a break for the next four weeks," President Ramaphosa said.
"As South Africa approaches its peak of COVID-19 infections, we must take a cautious approach to prevent schools from becoming sites of transmission," he explained.
"We ask you to do this because we believe it is important to ensure that schools do not become sites of transmission at a time when infections are rising fast," the President added.
It is barely a month as the country ordered for a phasal reopening of schools while relaxing the COVID-19 measures after the March 2020 global schools shut down.
However, the grade 12 students will take only a week’s break, while the grade 07 will take a two-week break period.
President Ramaphosa is hoping to extend the current academic year beyond the end of 2020 due to the disruption caused by the health pandemic.
South Africa is the fifth country worldwide heavily hit by the coronavirus, with over 400,000 registered cases.
