A migrant boat with 40 people aboard has drowned off the coast of Nouadhibou, Mauritania leaving just one survivor, the United Nations Humanitarian Commission for Refugees' Special Envoy for the Central Mediterranean situation, Vincent Cochetel confirmed in a tweet.

Out of the forty on board, only one migrant of the Guinea nationality managed to survive the tragic incident.

“They’re all dead, I think I am the only survivor”, the survivor recounts while receiving care at a hospital in Mauritania.

UNHCR spokesperson for Africa and the Mediterranean, Charlie Yaxley says that “immoral and unscrupulous smugglers” are to be blamed for always arranging such illegal  voyages.

Vincent Cochetel says that international organizations are trying to set up efforts to prevent such tragic occurrences but “traffickers keep lying to their clients.”

This incident is similar to another in December 3019 still along the Mauritania coast wherein over 62 illegal migrants died in an overcrowded boat with about 150 people en route for Sthe Canary Island in pain.

In this particular incident, 85 people survived.

Despite the high risk posed by illegal migration, many people, mostly desperate and “frustrated” African youths impatiently searching for greener pastures still prefer to risk the perilous journey to Europe.

Some say the high rate of youth unemployment is the push factor for clandestine migration.
