NAMIBIA: President rejects German genocide reparations offer

Namibian president Hage Geingob has turned down compensations from Germany for the 1904 to 1908 genocide in the then German South West Africa, today Namibia in which tens of thousands of Herero and Nama were massacred in the wake of uprisings against the German rule. 

To president Hage Geingob, this reparations offer is “not acceptable.”

“The current offer for reparations made by the German Government remains an outstanding issue and it is not acceptable to the Namibian Government”, President Geingob said. 

Mr. Geingob reiterated that “Diplomacy is about compromise” and that the country remains “resolute” in completing this mission. 

The Namibian Government says that Berlin has continuously rejected the use of the term “reparation” in the negotiation process on the grounds that it was also avoided during the Berlin negotiation with the Israeli Government on reparations for the victims of the Holocaust, but Mr. Geingob insists that the terminology would continue to be the subject of negotiation. 

Some Namibians are also insisting that if Germany paid Israel reparations for genocide against the Jews, then they are also obliged to pay Namibia reparations for genocide against the Herero and Nama.

According to Bloomberg Africa, Namibia will ask Germany to find development projects in seven regions as reparations for acts of genocide committed by the former colonial power.
