The recent coup d’etat in Mali to overthrow President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita has greatly been condemned by some international and regional bodies with some taking stringent actions against the Republic of Mali.
The European Union in Mali has suspended its training missions in the country following the 18 August 2020 coup d’etat in the country that forced President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita (IBK) to announce his resignation on state media.
The two European Union training missions of the Malian Army and Police have been put on hold till further notice.
During the Informal meeting of the EU Defence Ministers that took place on Wednesday 26 August 2020 in Berlin Germany, the EU announced that the two EU training missions in Mali will be temporarily suspended.
International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) has also suspended the membership of Mali to the organization.
The suspension was pronounced during an extraordinary session of the Permanent Council of La Francophonie on Tuesday 25 August 2020 held on video conference.
This decision comes few days after the African Union, and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) took a similar action by suspending Mali’s membership.
The OIF has also called for the immediate release of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita who was arrested on 18 August 2020 by the mutinous Malian military.
The OIF also intends to send a delegation to Bamako in the days ahead to assess the situation in the country.
A transitional government is being awaited in the days ahead.
“Mali was an important item on the agenda. We discussed the situation in Mali. We condemned the coup d’état on 18 August. The priority now is to support the efforts of ECOWAS in order to look for a solution in accordance with the aspirations of the Malian people.
The important thing is to stress that our civilian and military Missions in Mali have been temporarily put on hold, because the circumstances did not allow them to continue their normal activities. But they are still there and will start working again as soon as possible.
These activities are crucial. The European Union has invested a lot in Mali and we do not want to waste this effort. So, the work will continue and we will resume the activities of these Mission as soon as possible with the support of other countries in the Sahel region” High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security and Vice-president of the EU Commission, Josep Borrell Frontelles said.
