The 2020/2021 school year in Cameroon has officially and effectively kick-started after a very long holidays posed by the outbreak of the coronavirus in the country.

Students and teachers in Cameroon began the school year on Monday 05 October 2020, the International Teachers Day.

This academic year is unique with the introduction of shifts for schools who do not have enough space to meet the Minister's recommendation of not more than 50 students per class.

Schools were closed in Cameroon in March 2020 to curb the propagation of the coronavirus after the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus a global health pandemic.

However, in the month of June 2020, examination classes were reopened to prepare the students for official exams all over the national territory.

Though parents were worried about their children's safety in school, the Minister of Secondary education Professor Pauline Nalova Lyonga had assured them, during the official launch of the school year that all COVID19 barrier measures have been considered and will be applied as classes go on.

The wearing of a face mask is compulsory for all school people except for those in classes one to three. In the same light, proper hand washing and social distancing is mandatory to all.

While the basic and secondary education sectors are busy in class, those of the higher institutions will join in on 15 October 2020.
