Democratic party candidate, Joe Biden has defeated Republican party's Donald Trump to become the 46th President of the United States.

Winning in crucial states of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan took Biden to the threshold of 270 electoral votes, smashing the aspirations of his opponent Donald Trump. These were key states that Donald Trump had his last hope on as the case in 2016 that landed him the presidency.

Although Trump won in Florida and Ohio, that was not enough to make him override Biden.

Biden's victory seems to be the biggest blow to Trump as he continues to talk about electoral fraud, and is unprepared to concede the election.

That notwithstanding, the vote is what it is and marks the end of Trump’s first mandate as president of the United States. Joe Biden will be taking office on 20 January 2021.

How does the US election work?

As reported by The Guardian, the winner of the election is determined through a system called the electoral college. Each of the 50 states, plus Washington DC, is given a number of electoral college votes, adding up to a total of 538 votes. More populous states get more electoral college votes than smaller ones.

A candidate needs to win 270 electoral college votes (50% plus one) to win the election.

In every state except two – Maine and Nebraska – the candidate that gets the most votes wins all of the state’s electoral college votes.

Due to these rules, a candidate can win the election without getting the most votes at the national level. This happened at the last election, in which Donald Trump won a majority of electoral college votes although more people voted for Hillary Clinton across the US.

Who is vice-President of the US?

Kamala Harris, a California Senator and the states former attorney general will serve as the vice-president of the United States.

Kamala Harris has marked history by becoming the first woman, and first woman of colour to win the position of the vice-president of the United States.
