As US Democratic Party candidate, Joe Biden was declared winner of the 2020 US presidential election, the international community congratulated the 77-year-old President-elect and expressed their diversed interests.
This is how some leaders of the African continent reacted to Biden’s victory;
Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari congratulated Biden and called for “greater engagement with Africa”.
“Your election is a significant reminder that democracy is the best form of government because it offers the people the opportunity to change their government by peaceful means,” Buhari said in a tweet.
“The most powerful group are not the politicians, but voters who can decide the fate of candidates for elective office at the polling booth” Buhari added.
President Buhari also said that he looks forward to “enhanced cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, especially at economic, diplomatic, and political levels, including especially on the war against terrorism”.
Buhari also called on Biden “to promote greater engagement with Africa on the basis of reciprocal respects and common interests”.
Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok congratulated Biden and Harris “on behalf of the Sudanese people” and expressed his interest “to working closely with them both to continue building bridges of friendship and cooperation between our two nations and countries.”
President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa said that his government looks forward to “working with you [Biden] and deepening our bonds of friendship and cooperation”.
“We congratulate President-Elect @JoeBiden and Vice President @KamalaHarris and the American people on your election. We look forward to working with you and deepening our bonds of friendship and cooperation” Ramaphosa tweeted.
AUC chairperson Moussa Faki could not be indifferent. Mr. Faki congratulated the President-elect and Vice-President elect of the USA, and wished for a new and stronger USA-Africa relationship based on mutual respect and international cooperation.
“The African Union Commission looks forward to a new, stronger USA-Africa relationship based on mutual respect and shared values of international cooperation” AUC Chairperson Moussa Faki said.
On their part, Egypt, a key US ally “looks forward to joint cooperation and work towards strengthening strategic relations” between the two countries.
“The president stressed the aspiration for co-operation and joint action to strengthen the strategic bilateral relations between Egypt and the United States, in the interest of the two friendly countries and peoples.”
Uganda’s president Museveni wished for a renewed trade deal that will give African nations duty-free access to US markets.
“My congratulations to US President-Elect @JoeBiden and Vice President-Elect @KamalaHarris on your historic #Election2020 win. #Ethiopia looks forward to working closely with you” Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
“President-elect Joe Biden is a friend of our country who has visited us in the past and helped in strengthening the strong ties that exist between us and the United States of America,
“His win therefore presents an even bigger and better platform for our two countries to collaborate more closely for the prosperity of the people of our two nations” President Kenyatta said in a statement.
Mr. Kenyatta also thanked Mr Trump and his administration and “wished him well as he exits the high office of the president of the United States of America”.
“It is my sincere hope that President-Elect Biden’s tenure of office will be marked by the delivery of unity, security, progress and prosperity to all Americans,
“I am hopeful that over the course of his presidency, relations between Ghana and the United States of America will continue to grow from strength to strength, relations which have, over the years, been based on a shared agenda of freedom, development, progress and prosperity” Nana Akufo-Addo said.
“My warmest congratulations to @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris on their victory. Senegal is looking forward to continuing its excellent friendly and cooperation relations with the United States of America”, Macky Sall.
“Congratulations to President-Elect @JoeBiden and Vice President-Elect @KamalaHarris. I wish you success in your new roles and look forward to strengthening the relationship between our two countries. -IM”, President Issoufou Mahamadou.
President Paul Biya congratulated Mr. Biden and Kamala Harris on their historic victory and wished the two success in the exercise of their duties.
Mr. Biya also expressed his readiness to strengthen diplomatic ties between the Cameroon and the US.

I assure you of my readiness to strengthen the excellent relations of friendship between our countries” President Paul Biya tweeted.

We look forward to close cooperation and partnership. USA is a strong ally and partner in #Somalia’s progress & development” President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed tweeted.
Namibia's Hage Geingob recognized Mr. Biden’s support to their independence from the white-minority in 1990 from white-minority after a 25-year war.
“During our struggle for freedom, we came to know him as a senator who opposed apartheid in South Africa and the region,” President Hage Geingob said.
“I look forward to working with @JoeBiden for stronger bilateral relations and multilateralism for a fairer world” he added.
Liberia's President, George Weah did not only congratulate the US presidential winners but pointed to the health crisis plaguing the world as a major challenge for Biden and his team.
“He assumes the leadership of the United States at a very challenging time for the country and the world as we all face a global health crisis. I urge all Americans to forge together in peace and unity,” Weah tweeted.
“As the traditional ally of the United States, Liberia stands ready to further enhance and rekindle our long, historic and unique bilateral relations. Congratulations!”, Weah expressed his wish.
The president of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa had to follow the bandwagon in congratulating Mr. Biden despite the country's tense relationship with the US over its human rights record.
“Zimbabwe wishes you every successes in leading the American people. I look forward to working with you to increase co-operation between our two nations,” said President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
