After long speculations from many Cameroonians as to whether President Biya will address the Nation ahead of this year’s National Day commemoration, President Biya took to social media this afternoon calling on all Cameroonians to follow his message to the Nation this evening at 8:00pm local time.
These speculations arose as a result of the silence of President Biya since the outbreak of the deadly coronavirus pandemic in the country.
The first case of the coronavirus was discovered in Cameroon on 06 March 2020, and since then a number of measures have been put in place to curb the rapid spread of the virus. Schools were shut down on 18 March 2020 all over the national territory. Economic activities witnessed some changes too, with drinking spots ordered to close at 6:00pm. The Transport sector also experienced some restrictions S to the number of persons onboard a bike or vehicle.
As the number of COVID-19 cases continues to increase drastically, the physical celebration of 20th May National Unity Day has been cancelled as a means to respect social distancing. The International Labour Day Celebration was also cancelled in Cameroon for same precautionary reasons.
Citizens of Cameroon have however been encouraged to commemorate the 2020 National Unity Day at their individual levels while they continue to respect COVID-19 safety rules.
This evening 19 May 2020, President Biya shall be addressing the nation ahead of the 48th edition of the 20th May commemoration of National Unity under the theme “All United in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, for a resilient Cameroon, resolutely turned towards peace, stability and economic development”.
