Nature has a way of compensating for genuine lose. Farmers and grazers in Dumbu village in Misaje SubDivision have found a middle way of tolerating each other in their bid to living together.
Though cases of herds of cattle breaking in to farms and eating crops especially in the dry season when pasture is rare are common, these farmers who are locals always find it not useful to pursue any legal suit against the grazers because of other benefits earned in the course of the year. Moreover locals have learned to use the soft power of negotiation instead of fighting grazers in court which is expensive and time consuming.
Every rainy season, grazers suffer a lose of their cattle to lightening and Fulani’s don’t eat meat of a cow that is not slaughtered by them following their Muslim faith but the locals who are mostly farmers who eat the meat of cattle killed by lightening are called in to have a field day.
It is only of late that Fulanis started doing farming themselves. Locals use to be hired to farm for the Fulanis and in the course of farming for the Fulanis, locals are even allocated a portion of fertile fenced area to grow their vegetable. Farmers whose farms are not far from the grazers hut often make some money from transporting salt from the market to the grazers hut on their way to the farm.
According to James Muso, a farmer and dealer in firewood, every three days he gets hired to transport three bags of salt for a grazer and this fetches him FCFA 900 to 1200 depending on the distance. On his way back he brings firewood that would fetch him FCFA 600 and he would on such days earn about FCFA 1800 that would enable him contribute for his weekly saving of FCFA 500 and take care his other needs.
“……when luck comes my way I make about FCFA 3000 at the end of the week from my fire wood business and carrying of salt for grazers. This enables me to take care of my family needs……” he said.
Accord to Umarou Issa the grandson of Ardo Gadamba, he was born in Dumbu and has grown to have some many friends who are locals, what differentiates him from locals is just his physiognomy for he speaks the local language just like anybody else and eats and drinks with the locals.
“….My late father though grazer, was a diviner and fractured bone healer. Many locals with fracture consult with my father and live with us for weeks until they are healed. In the course of their stay with us, they become family friends and one thing leads to the other…some locals keep their fowls to grow with us and these fowls that feed on insects attracted by cow dung grow fat and multiply in their numbers…..” Joli Jango explained.
My farm is fenced with barb wire and most often cattle in search of pasture break the fence and eat my cassava. It pains me a lot thinking of how much I put in to cultivate the crop. When I complain to the grazer, he would apologize with a token which sometime less than the amount I would have sold the cassava at maturity and would promise to increase vigilance on his cattle…” Mami Grace Kiki said.
