The Duke of Edinburgh, Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, HRH Prince Philip is dead at the age of 99.
“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning [Friday 09 April 2021] at Windsor Castle”, the Buckingham Palace announced.
The Duke of Edinburgh was married to Queen Elizabeth II for over 70 years and was the longest-serving consort of Britain.
Prince Philip’s death came on his eldest son Prince Charles’ 16th wedding anniversary to Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.
The bells of London’s Westminster Abbey, where Prince Philip married Queen Elizabeth, rang on Friday evening, once every 60 seconds for up to 99 times to honour each year of his life.
British flags have been lowered to half-mast and gun salutes will be fired across the UK at noon on Saturday 10 April 2021 “Across the United Kingdom, in Gibraltar and on HM Ships at sea, saluting batteries will fire 41 rounds at one round every minute for 40 minutes,” the UK Ministry of Defence stated.
Tributes have been pouring in for Prince Philip, and families dropping flowers at the royal palace in memory of him.
However, because of COVID-19 restrictions, the entire public have been encouraged to “make a donation to a charity instead of leaving floral tributes in memory of The Duke of Edinburgh.”
In addition, an online condolences book has been launched on the family’s official website for those who wish to leave messages.
