Few days to school reopening in Cameroon, Bishops of the Douala Ecclesiastical Province under the leadership of Mgr Samuel Kleda, Teachers' trade unions in Cameroon have expressed their worries.
In an open letter signed by the Archbishop of Douala, Mgr Samuel Kleda has said that Catholic Mission schools in Douala will not be reopening on 01 June 2020 till further notice.
Mgr Kleda says that one of the duties of the Church is to protect lives and that with the surge in the number of coronavirus cases in the country lately, Catholic Mission schools in Douala are not ready to open their classrooms come Monday 01 June 2020.
On their part, Teachers, through some 19 trade unions in Cameroon amongst which the Teachers’Association of Cameroon (TAC), the Cameroon Teachers’Trade Union (CATTU), have sent a petition to the Prime Minister, Head of Government Joseph Dion Ngute demanding the government to suspend the reopening of schools and evaluate students on the work already covered.
That notwithstanding, the trade unionists have said that if schools most reopen, the government must ensure the “distribution of free face masks and alcohol-based hand sanitizers” for the equal protection of all stakeholders involved because some students do not have the money to purchase face masks and hand sanitizers.
PM Joseph Dion Ngute on 15 May announced the effective reopening of schools on 01 June 2020 for examination students.
The first case of the novel coronavirus was identified in Cameroon on 07 March 2020, and schools have been closed since 13 March over the national territory.
Current statistics in Cameroon show’s over 5,000 registered cases of Coronavirus patients, about 170 deaths, and close to 2000 recoveries.
