The Football Federation of Australia (FFA) and the New Zealand Football (NZF) have won the award to host the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The bidding process was a tough one and saw Brazil and Japan withdraw their bids to host the remarkable global tournament.
Australia/New Zealand emerged as the front-runner with the highest overall score of 4.1 out of 5. Japan scored 3.9 while Colombia had a score of 2.8.
The Japan Football Association withdrew it’s bid citing challenges to host two major soccer tournaments in a short time frame, following the one-year postponement of the Tokyo Olympics.
Colombia continued the bidding process with the Australia/New Zealand counterpart and got just 13 votes out of 35 against 22 votes for Australia/New Zealand.
This historic joint Australia/New Zealand bid victory makes it the first FIFA Women’s World Cup tournament to be held in the Asia-Pacific region and with the number of teams expanding from 24 to 32.
“As FIFA’S first co-confederation bidders, we present FIFA with an innovative concept that combines technical excellent vision and passion with an extraordinary opportunity to drive women’s football to new heights,” FFA and NZF said.
