The Vietnamese police has confiscated over 300,000 used condoms which have been cleaned and repackaged to be illegally resold.
This was during a market inspection mission in which an allegedly “recycling” company was raided near Ho Chi Minh City in the local southern province of Binh Duong.
During this inspection trip, the police discovered bags of used condoms that weighed about 360kg which is an equivalent of at least 345, 000 condoms.
A woman, Pham Thi Thanh Ngoc in her early 30s, who was identified to be the owner of the condom “recycling” company confessed that she buys the used condoms from a man who supplies her regularly on a monthly basis.
She added that, after buying the used prophylactics, they are being boiled well in water, dried, and reshaped on a wooden phallus and then repackaged in unbranded plastic bags and sold in kilograms.
A kilogram of the already “recycled” prophylactics would then be sold at $0.17.
According to Metro, reports claim they were being supplied to nearby hotels and market stalls within the province.
At Press time, the exact quantity already sold or dispatched for the market, and the exact source of the used condoms were yet to be revealed.
However, many people question why those involved could not engage as distribution or marketing agents of brand new condoms rather than recycling already used ones, the process which might even be more tedious, costly and time consuming?
