Cameroonian-born Issa Hayatou has been granted the status of Honorary President of the Confederation of African Football proposed by CAF’s Executive Committee for his “immense role in the development of African football.”
“The Executive Committee has decided to propose to the General Assembly of CAF to grant the status of Honorary President of CAF to Mr. Issa Hayatou, the renowned personality of African football for his work.”
His nomination to this position was approved by CAF’s General Assembly on Friday 11 December 2020 during its 42nd Ordinary General Assembly.
Issa Hayatou has served as CAF President for 30years since 1987 till 2017. This makes him the longest-serving CAF president.
As CAF President, he was credited for influencing the increase in the number of teams representing Africa at the World Cup, contributed to an increase in the number of women taking part in sporting activities, among other achievements.
Mr. Hayatou’s appointment comes barely weeks after his successor, Ahmad Ahmad was slammed a five-year ban from football activities by world’s football governing body, FIFA, for breach of professional ethics.
He is currently the Board Chair of Cameroon’s National Football Academy (ANAFOOT), where he was appointed by President Paul Biya, shortly after his exit from CAF in 2017.
Issa Hayatou was also one-time Interim President of the world football governing body, FIFA.
