According to a statement released by the French defense ministry on Monday 28 December 2020, three French soldiers have been killed in the Operation Barkhane in Mali, part of a larger mission aimed at fighting Islamist extremists in Africa’s Sahel region.
The three French soldiers were killed on Monday when their armored vehicle was hit by an explosive device in Hombori region.
French President Emmanuel Macron has saluted “the memory of these soldiers, who died for France in the accomplishment of their mission.
Macron also expressed his confident in the French soldiers in the Sahel and reiterated on “France’s determination to pursue the fight against terrorism” in the region.
Former French President François Hollande also saluted the courage and determination of the French soldiers in combatting terrorism and ensuring security. He extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
“Our pain is immense after the death of three of our soldiers in Mali. Their disappearance painfully reminds us of the difficulty of their mission against terrorism and the nobility of their dedication to our security. I extend my deepest condolences to their families, ”François Hollande said.
At least 47 French soldiers have been killed since the beginning of the military engagement on the ground in the Sahel in January 2013 where more than 5,100 French soldiers are on mission.
