Since the killing of Black American George Floyd by a Minneapolis Police cop on 25 May 2020, the US President Donald Trump has received so many sanctions on different social media platforms for some of his utterances that were considered to be ‘glorifying violence’ and promoting hate.
Twitter has recently labeled a video tweeted by Mr. Trump as “manipulated video” because Trump actually cropped the video to show two kids running away from each other because of their colour difference whereas the original video actually shows how these two kids hugged each other happily.
Twitter earlier covered Trump’s tweet that said “when the looting starts, the shooting starts” because the content was ‘glorifying violence’.
Facebook however did not take similar action with regard to this same content shared on its platform. Facebook's inaction led to the resignation of some of its workers.
Facebook later removed some of Trump’s ads for violating its policy against organized hate.
The co-founder of Reddit Alexis Ohanian resigned from the company and requested that he be replaced by a Blackboard member.
Snapchat said it would no longer promote Trump’s account on its platform.
Today, many other social media platforms are taking more serious measures against Trump’s outrages on social media.
Recently, on Monday 29 June 2020, Reddit banned pro-Trump forum ‘The_Donald’ and over 2000 subreddit accounts that promoted hate.
Reddit said that ‘The_Donald’ forum has consistently broken its rules, antagonized other communities and the moderators have refused to meet Reddit’s “most basic expectations” even after warning notices were sent.
Twitch, a video streaming service with online gamers has suspended and removed and offending comments made on stream by an account belonging to the Trump Campaign.
The content that necessitated Twitch’s action is a video of Trump’s 2016 campaign rally in which he called Mexicans “rapists” and “criminals”, and a video of Trump’s recent Tusla rally.
