Ramon Olorunwa Abbas, the Instagram celebrity and multimillionaire popularly known as Hushpuppi or just Hush is been accused of conspiring to launder about 14.7million dollars from a foreign financial institution in February 2020.
According to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Hushpuppi and his transnational network of cyber criminals have been able to scam several companies and individuals of a total sum of money amounting to about 1.7 billion dollars.
Some of his victims include a US Law firm, a foreign bank and an English Premier League Football club.
Hushpuppi was arrested in Dubai in June 2020 by the FBI in collaboration with INTERPOL and Dubai Police and taken to the US.
Hushpuppi was arrested together with his “co-worker “ 29-year-old Jacob Olalekan Ponle, aka Mr. Woodberry.
At the time of their arrest, the Police recovered 40million dollars cash, 13 luxury cars worth 6.8million dollars, 21 computers, 47 smartphones, 15 storage memory devices, 5 hard disks containing information and the email addresses of nearly 2million alleged victims.
Hushpuppi appeared at the Chicago Court in the US on 03 July 2020.
Hushpuppi’s lawyer Gal Pissetzky says that his client, the defendant who posts lavishly on Instagram about his extravagant lifestyle, is not a criminal and had made his money legitimately.
According to him, Hushpuppi was paid by designer brands to promote their products.
“Abbas was running a legitimate business and very legitimate Instagram account and did not take part in any scam or fraud...." he said.
“He is a social media influencer with millions of followers, with millions of people that respect and loved him, and he loved them, and that’s what he did. In today’s society, that’s a business,” Mr. Pissetzky emphasized.
He added that his client was illegally transferred to the US. As such, Mr. Pissetzky claims that the FBI kidnapped his client Hushpuppi because this the US and Dubai have not signed any extradition treaty.
“In my opinion, the FBI and the government here acted illegally when they kidnapped him from Dubai without any legal process to do so,” Mr Pissetzky opined.
“There was no extradition, there were no legal steps taken, there were no court documents filed, it was simply a call to the FBI. He is not a citizen of the United States, the US had absolutely no authority to take him.”
“If Dubai wanted to expel him, they should have expelled him back to Nigeria. I’ve never heard of anything like that. That is the real story here”, said Mr. Pissetzky.
Hushpuppi and Mr. Woodberry are currently being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC), a US prison in Chicago.
If found guilty, Hushpuppi might spend up to 20 years in jail and all the wealth amassed fraudulently will be confiscated.
Who is Hushpuppi?
Ramon Olorunwa Abbas, 37, is a Nigerian, Dubai based Instagram celebrity who is popularly known as Hushpuppi.
Hushpuppi has over 2.5 million followers on Instagram with the handle/name Ray Hushpuppi.
He always posts on Instagram about his extravagant lifestyle and has attracted millions of followers.
Hushpuppi once told his followers that he posts about his luxury life to inspire others to make more of their lives.
“I post a few of these things so that someone can see my page someday and decide not to give up.”
He is accused of building a transnational network of cybercriminals who conspire to launder hundreds of millions of dollars from frauds known as Business Email Compromise (BEC) and other scams.
He was arrested in Dubai in the month of June 2020 and taken to the US.
He is now at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) awaiting trial.
Mr. Woodberry?
Jacob Olaleken Ponle, 37, aka Mr. Woodberry another Dubai based alleged Nigerian scammer.
He was arrested in June 2020 in Dubai together with his “colleague” Hushpuppi and expelled to the US for conspiring to commit wire fraud.
Mr. Woodberry is also awaiting trial at the Chicago Court in the USA.
