A United Nations cargo plane has crashed at the Beledweyne Airport in central Somalia.
The Dash 8 cargo aircraft, a charted flight from Djibouti with humanitarian aid to Beletwein crashed when the pilot tried to dodge a donkey on the runway and caught flames immediately it landed.
"One of our aircraft has crashed in Somalia, it was carrying food for the AMISOM (African Union Mission to Somalia) troops in Beletwein, Somalia where the Djibouti troops are based”, BlueBird Aviation’s General Manager, Captain Hussein Mohamed said.
“The plane was from Djibouti earlier this morning, and upon landing a donkey crossed the runway, they hit the donkey and swerved off to a trench on the side of the runway, but the crew are (sic) perfectly okay” he explained.
All three crew members survived with minor injuries but the aircraft has been severely damaged.
Rescuers attempted to safe the burning plane but all efforts were in vain as the airport lacked firefighting equipment. Individuals volunteered with buckets of water but the fire outpowered their efforts.
Aviation Safety Network, which monitors aircraft accidents, tweeted that the plane was a "Kenyan DHC-8 aircraft [that] crashed and burst into flames at Beledweyne Airport, Somalia. Reportedly everyone on board survived the accident"
The airline specializes in cargo flights and charter flights for governments, humanitarian aid companies, NGOs, and other private companies in and around Kenya. It also offers medical evacuation and relief services.
Somalia has suffered about three crash-landed plane incidents amid the coronavirus pandemic.
