Ageing in good health and improved lifespan amid COVID-19

With a positive and healthy ageing, it is possible to have an improved lifespan. Many nowadays are working towards being able to live for many years and this is quite remarkable.

However, the global COVID-19 pandemic has made this goal even more  challenging for all especially the elderly population. 

It is for this reason that the positive and Healthy Ageing Association Cameroon (PHAA-CAM), a non-governmental organization that advocates for a Healthy living of the elderly in society recommends that we take advantage of the situation at hand and care more for the elderly by ensuring that they eat healthily, exercise regularly, allow them to participate in some decision making so as to feel loved and cared for.

Trying to delay the onset of age-related conditions is an important aspect that will greatly reduce the number of diseases brought about by ageing. 

We are not immortal but it is possible to live healthier and longer ranging from healthy eating habits to social insertion.

While there has been a steady increase in lifespan across the world, mostly attributed to improved quality and access to health care, elderly care has to be reconsidered. 

In Cameroon, the story is not far from being similar especially with elderly care. Life expectancy has been on an increase but could be better if all health and societal factors are put together.

However, improving lifespan should not be about preventing death, but rather reducing the time people spend in sick beds as this will boost the ageing process given that being able to perform activities of daily living independently has a positive effect on health.

Hence, a serene environment, support from family members, socialization, lifestyle changes will increase living fully and delay ageing conditions despite the fact that they are inevitable.
